Bargaly Wood is a pleasant leisurely ride. Its ideal for first timers, families and children - or those who reckon it's been too long since they were in the saddle!

The route takes you along forest trails, farm tracks and quiet public roads in mixed woodland and pastoral setting with views up Bargaly Glen and to the hills beyond.

The Old Nursery

Starting out through the open areas and fragmented woodland of the old forest nursery you soon reach the forest edge. You climb briefly on a wide path though some very fine conifers before a similar descent brings you down to the Little Park Farm Road.

Papy Ha

An easy spin along the road takes you past the site of Papy Ha. The name refers to a site of a holy dwelling long since derelict and comes from 'Papy', the Norse for a preacher or teacher and 'Ha' the Saxon word for hall or house. Continue on, pass through the farmyard and follow the course of the old road through a couple of fields. As the views up the glen to the Galloway hills start to open out you Note that the track can be a bit muddy in winter.

Palnure Burn

On rejoining a tarmac road you cross over the rushing water of Palnure Burn via an old stone bridge and continue easily back down the glen on the road alongside Bargaly Wood. Recross Palnure Burn to reach a short climb back up to the visitor centre.

Easy and short. A pleasant way to wander round the valley with younger kids. Not challenging enough for keener types, mind.

Nice and flat family route but track through field very muddy and covered in cow s**t so youngster on tag along covered from head to toe also 4 gates to open and close.Coming from a farm this didn't bother us to much but might be an issue for some !

Very easy going beginners route. To be honest our 7 yr old kids found it pretty boring as its all very flat. Also, its mostly on very quiet back country roads which doesn't make it feel very much like mountain biking. All in all though, a pretty little route for families with young kids.

Facilities

Catering

Forestry Commission Scotland is currently tendering for businesses to run the catering at all the visitor centres in the Galloway Forest Park.

We are hoping to get caterers in at Kirroughtree as soon as possible and at Clatteringshaws and Glentrool once the centres are fully open, hopefully at the end of July.

In the meantime, if you are visiting Kirroughtree, you can still get light refreshments from the Breakpad bikeshop.

Newton Stewart has a good selection of places to eat and drink.

Parking

Ample parking is at the trail head by the visitor centre. Parking costs £2 per day.

Toilets

There are toilet facilities a short walk from the trail head at the visitor centre. The toilets are open all year.

Bike Hire

The Break Pad bike shop and hire cycle on site is open 7 days a week - 10am - 5pm. They offer a wide range of demo and hire bikes, bike sales, with a fully equipped workshop for service and repairs. Diversions: On the taster loop, the final section is closed from marker 25 to the end due to the construction work of the new visitors centre. This will be in place till the construction work is finished..
